Steps to Recovery
Abortion is often celebrated as empowering and said to not have lasting effects. But, the fact of the matter is, just like anything else, abortion has the potential to cause lasting short-term or long-term effects. And for those who are affected, it may be difficult to speak up or find a place to receive care and start healing. Whatever your experience, your emotions are valid and it’s important to begin the healing process in a variety of ways.
Take Care of Yourself.
Sometimes after dealing with a stressful situation or going through a traumatic or difficult experience, we forget even the most basic necessities. It’s important you take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, exercise, eat well and just rest. If you have particular health concerns, you should always talk with a doctor.
Explore Your Hobbies.
It can be therapeutic to revisit favorite activities or even start a new hobby. Finding a way to keep busy and to process our thoughts and emotions can be so helpful. Sometimes even finding a group of like-minded individuals to share in a hobby with can be a great source of connection.
Talk with an Unbiased Professional.
Sometimes healing comes through talking with another person who is trained and nonjudgmental. Having somebody who can listen to your story and help you process the emotions you are going through can be incredibly helpful and liberating. You may want to find a therapist, post-abortion support group, or talk with a consultant.
Remember, despite the intensity of what you’re experiencing, you are not alone. There is hope and healing on the horizon for you. If you’re looking for abortion care, Avenue Women’s Center is here for you. Our professional and caring pregnancy consultants would love to hear your story and connect you to available resources. We are here to help you take your next steps in receiving abortion care.
