When Family Conflict Affects Pregnancy Decision-Making
Conflict doesn’t always look similar from one family or individual to the next, but clashing with others (especially loved ones) now and then is unavoidable. The tension that you’re experiencing with your family may or may not relate to your unexpected pregnancy. But chances are, it’s influencing your decision-making process. Perhaps your fears about parenting are linked with fears of losing your family’s support. You may be worried that they wouldn’t provide the practical or emotional support you’d need to choose parenting due to the recent friction. Or, maybe you’re concerned that existing tension would increase if you had a baby. Know that it’s possible to find healing and build a healthy support network- with or without the backing of your family- regardless of the circumstances you’re facing.
Building a Strong Support Network
In any unexpected or intentional pregnancy situation, building a strong support system is critical. It’s important to confide in someone you trust, especially if the positive pregnancy result you’ve received is causing significant stress. Maybe you wish that a member (or members) of your family could be supportive. If that isn’t possible right now due to a conflict that you’re navigating, this may be something that you need to grieve. Just know that you have options of other people to go to- even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. Consider speaking with a close and reliable friend, a mentor, a professional counselor, a faith leader, or a pregnancy consultant. Think broadly about your support network. Lean on different people with different strengths who can help you navigate your pregnancy journey in different ways.
Discovering Healthy Motivation for a Confident Pregnancy Choice
If you want to seek restoration in your family relationships, don’t give up hope. Resolving conflict will likely require a healing process and steps taken toward reconciliation on both sides. All of this is possible for the future. In the meantime, don’t let the tension that you’re experiencing with your family become a main driver of your choice for abortion, adoption, or parenting. Focus on your personal strengths and available resources. Explore alternative sources of emotional support, and ask yourself which option(s) your values, beliefs, and instincts are pointing you towards. If these factors form the foundation of your decision instead of fear, you’ll likely step into any pregnancy outcome with greater confidence.
Your feelings toward your family are valid, but conflict may try to disrupt your process of making a grounded pregnancy decision nevertheless. Avenue Women’s Center is here to help you navigate your pregnancy journey with loved ones when that’s possible, and build a thriving support system no matter what. We’re passionate about providing high-quality, no-cost services with the highest standards of empathy and professionalism.
