Community: The Best Medicine for Adversity

Community is always a relevant subject that’s worth talking about.  But February feels like an especially appropriate time to highlight its importance- particularly when it comes to facing adversity.  First of all, it’s Black History Month!  The Civil Rights Movement would not have been the groundbreaking movement that it was without the joining of many brave individuals, who stood in solidarity for their cause.  On a different note, Galentine’s Day (February 13th) honors the importance of friendships among women.  Winter is also a good time in general to focus on the value of community.  These first few months of the year tend to bring gloomy weather and few holidays or activities, so it’s easy to feel isolated.

It’s clear that we humans are wired to live in community.  Not only that, but we need it to overcome adversity.  Maybe you’re facing the hardship of an unexpected pregnancy right now.  Any person in your shoes would need support- would need to feel like she’s not alone- in order to rise above her challenges and discover a positive outcome.  Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding an unexpected pregnancy often make community-building especially difficult.  Avenue Women’s Center is here to help women facing these situations build healthy support networks one piece at a time.

Why is Finding Community During an Unexpected Pregnancy So Hard?

It can be difficult to find community support in the middle of an unexpected pregnancy for a number of reasons.  If you’re in this situation having just taken a pregnancy test, you’re probably feeling hesitant to share the news with your loved ones.  Undoubtedly, you’re wrestling with anxiety about how to approach this difficult conversation and how your family might react.  Perhaps you’re feeling embarrassed about finding yourself in this position- whether you’re afraid of others’ disapproval or struggling with disappointment of your own.  On the other hand, maybe your loved ones are already aware of your situation.  Maybe they’ve made hurtful comments about your pregnancy or the pregnancy options you’re considering.

A Strong Support System Starts with One Person

Be thoughtful about who you tell and how you share, as an unexpected pregnancy is personal. You have the right to privacy, but keeping it completely to yourself may mean missing out on support and helpful perspectives.  The best approach is to start with one person who you trust to listen well and offer honest feedback while respecting your privacy and autonomy.  Maybe you already have someone like this in your life.  If you don’t, imagine what it would be like to receive support from a person who shows that level of care.  Know that this is achievable.  If you need help creating a strong support system, Avenue can be the first building block, while helping you connect with other advocates and allies.

There’s Power in Community

Modern Western culture tends to promote a “do it yourself” mentality.  It’s true that personal empowerment contributes to wellness and healthy decision-making.  However, as a society, we don’t always recognize the vital role that community plays in all of this.  Our human need for connection (especially in the midst of adversity) is a strength- not a weakness.  Inviting people who you trust into a difficult personal journey takes more courage than building fences to keep them out.

A phrase like, “community is the best medicine for adversity” may sound a bit cliché.  Still, our staff at Avenue Women’s Center hopes you’ll take this underlying message to heart.  Healthy community truly is a powerful force that can empower you to cope with overwhelming circumstances and find joy in the most painful seasons of life.  Our caring team also hopes you’ll take the brave step of reaching out to us.  We’re here to be a supportive sounding board and a source of reliable information as you process your next steps in your pregnancy journey.  Our pregnancy consultants and medical professionals are dedicated to serving you with the highest standards of empathy, integrity, and professionalism.
