Considering Abortion as an International Student

There’s no such thing as a stress-free unexpected pregnancy.  But what if you’re facing this situation while studying internationally?  If this describes your experience, chances are, you’re feeling really overwhelmed.  You’re probably longing for clarity, support, and a positive outcome- like any person who’s coping with an unexpected pregnancy.  But your situation is unique.  As a student who’s outside of her country of origin, you’re dealing with extra hurdles and possible complications (socially, legally, etc.).  Know that you’re not alone in these difficult circumstances.  Avenue Women’s Center is here to help.

Avenue Women’s Center is a limited medical clinic and early pregnancy center with multiple locations in Chicagoland, Illinois.  Our goal is to equip women with the tools and support they need to make their best pregnancy decisions, no matter what challenges they’re facing.  We believe that no person should have to make a pregnancy choice without this strong foundation.

Your Unique Challenges

Here are just a few reasons why an unexpected pregnancy may be especially challenging for an international student like you.

  • Your education is probably an important focus in your life right now. You may be busy with your studies, under pressure to succeed, and afraid that this pregnancy will take you off the academic path you’ve started.
  • You’re away from your home and family. Not only are you adjusting to a new environment and culture, but you’re probably feeling a lack of emotional support… especially if you’re coping with language barriers.  You may also be unsure how to include your loved ones back home in your pregnancy journey when your access to them is limited.
  • You may be unfamiliar with pregnancy options and resources in the country where you’re studying. If you’re attending an American school or university, perhaps you already know that abortion laws vary significantly by state.  This can make them very difficult to understand, even for people who were born and raised in the U.S.  Undocumented individuals may have particular questions and concerns about their legal rights, health care options, potential risks, etc.
