“Discovering I’m Pregnant- Just When I Thought the Holidays Couldn’t Get Any More Stressful”

Are you coping with the stress of an unexpected pregnancy in the middle of the holiday season?  If so, you’re probably feeling like you have way too much on your plate.  It’s normal to feel completely overwhelmed after discovering an unexpected pregnancy.  This can manifest itself a little differently for each individual.  Maybe you’re so overcome with anxiety that you feel paralyzed in your decision-making.  Or, maybe your instinct is to act and solve this problem immediately.  Perhaps you’re dealing with both of these conflicting forces simultaneously.  The hustle and bustle of the holiday season can easily aggravate an already frazzled mind.

Avenue Women’s Center strives to create a safe, calm space for individuals who are coping with seemingly chaotic circumstances.  We’re a first-step pregnancy clinic that provides free and confidential limited medical services to women who are facing an unexpected pregnancy.  Our goal is to equip them with the information and support they need to cope well, and make a confident pregnancy decision when they’re ready to take that step.

Cultivating Peace this Holiday Season

“Peace on Earth” is a phrase that’s often heard this time of year.  Ironically, the holiday season tends to feel anything but peaceful within the context of modern culture.  Here’s the good news: It’s possible to cultivate peace in your life no matter what’s going on around you.  This approach comes with many benefits for your present and future health.  Developing a peaceful mindset can improve your mental well-being and increase your resiliency.  It can even help you make a more confident pregnancy decision.  The healthier and more empowered you are, the healthier and more empowered your choices will be.

Consider these tips to cultivate peace and calmness in your life this holiday season and beyond!

Take excellent care of yourself.

Self-care is important and achievable.  It can look like anything from eating a well-balanced meal to taking a sensory walk.  For tips on self-care methods, check out our blogs, 8 Methods for Self-Care During Pregnancy and, Taking Time for Self-Care This Holiday Season.  For you, self-care may involve giving yourself time and space to process the news of your pregnancy.  Let your pregnancy news sink in and reflect on your next best steps before choosing abortion, adoption, or parenting.

Find support. Talk it out.

When it comes to navigating unexpected challenges and managing stress, a healthy support network can make all the difference in the world.  Consider sharing your situation with someone you trust, and choose your support person(s) with care.  Look for someone who will listen well, challenge you in a kind and respectful way, and offer unconditional emotional support.

Learn where you stand with your pregnancy.

It’s important to be aware of the medical circumstances surrounding your pregnancy.  A limited medical ultrasound at Avenue can tell you where in your body the pregnancy is located, how far along you are, and your chances of miscarriage.  Having this information can equip you to make a knowledgeable choice with your health as a top priority.  It’s never guaranteed that you’ll feel reassured by the answers you receive.  But knowing where you stand will allow you to take informed next steps, which can cultivate a sense of peace in the long run as you engage in your decision-making process.

It’s natural for your circumstances to influence your mindset, so nurturing peace in the middle of an unexpected pregnancy is bound to be challenging.  Still, you’re not defenseless against the stress that surrounds you.  You can choose to pursue peace of mind in any season of the year (or of life).  Avenue Women’s Center is here to partner with you on that journey.  When you reach out, we promise you’ll be met with empathy and respect by our expert staff.
