How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

If you’ve recently had unprotected (or even protected) sex and your period is late, you might be pregnant. Your first step is to come to Avenue Women’s Center for a free and confidential medical-grade pregnancy test.

Can I Just Take an At-Home Test?

Over-the-counter pregnancy tests can be accurate, but many women panic when their period doesn’t start and they take the test too early. Or, they don’t follow the directions correctly. It’s even possible the test is out of date.

Come to Avenue for a medical-grade pregnancy test. Our tests are over 99.5% accurate just 10 days after possible conception. Plus, they’re free. We promise to keep your appointment and test results strictly confidential.

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

When a woman gets pregnant, the fertilized egg attaches to her uterine lining, which is called implantation. The placenta (which provides nutrients for your pregnancy) forms and produces the hormone hCG. This hormone enters your bloodstream and urine.

The amount of hCG increases rapidly, but it’s important to wait until it’s increased enough for a pregnancy test to show a positive result. The earlier you take a pregnancy test, the harder it might be for the test to detect hCG.

At our center, one of our pregnancy consultants will ask about timing, explain the process, and administer a urine pregnancy test. Your confidential results will be available at that time.

What if the Pregnancy Test is Positive?

If you receive a positive result from our medical-grade test, it’s time to move forward with your next step. At Avenue Women’s Center, we can schedule a no-cost ultrasound which will give you more information about your pregnancy.

What are the Benefits of Having an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound will confirm your pregnancy. You’ll know if you’re still pregnant or if you’ve had a natural miscarriage. Plus, you’ll find out how many weeks you’ve been pregnant and if the pregnancy is located in the correct area.
