Can we start with a general idea of the price range?

According to sources we were able to identify, the price may be as little as $0 out of pocket for you, or go as high as over $3,000. A Guttmacher Institute 2017 Fact Sheet reports that as of 2011-2012, a surgical abortion performed at 10 weeks of the pregnancy in a non-hospital setting averaged $480, including local anesthesia. A medical abortion (utilizing the abortion pill) at 9 weeks of pregnancy cost $504. The American Pregnancy Association finds that the cost of a medical abortion may range from $300 to $800.

This leads to the next question: What exactly are these variables that can cause such a wide range in the cost of abortions?

• Abortions in some parts of the country are more expensive than in other areas. Abortion prices in the Midwest tend to be a bit lower than in other regions.

• How far along the pregnancy has progressed also plays a part. Along with the level of complexity, possible complications, and risks of the procedure, costs go up for abortions performed later in the pregnancy.

• What type of procedure you are choosing, surgical or medical, will make a difference in the price.

• Additional charges, such as for various types of testing, lab work, anesthesia or other medications, may be part of the final expense.

• Whether you go to an abortion clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital will also impact the price. A hospital procedure will almost always cost more.

• Your out-of-pocket expense may also depend on whether or not you have insurance or medical coverage.

These are all areas you will want to explore as you weigh your options and to find out “how much are abortions” for you in your unique situation.

As we noted earlier, many questions – including the financial expense – are in front of you as you consider your options.
