Schedule Today

You may want your partner’s perspective on your pregnancy while also wanting the freedom to make a decision that reflects your own values and circumstances. Finding that balance isn’t always easy.

Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Avenue Women’s Center if you want to talk this through in a no-pressure and no-judgment space.

Before the Conversation Starts

It may help to sit with your own thoughts before bringing your partner in. Not because your partner’s feelings don’t matter, but because taking time to understand your own thoughts beforehand can help you feel more confident when you have the conversation.

What kind of support are you actually looking for: someone to listen, logistical help, or a steady presence? Knowing that going in gives you something to hold onto.

Telling Him What You Need

When you do bring him in, being direct about the role you want him to play reduces a lot of friction.

Some women want their partner to listen without responding right away. Others want to research options together. Others want to know where he stands without feeling like his answer is supposed to determine theirs.

When Involvement Starts to Feel Like Pressure

A partner sharing his honest feelings is one thing. A partner who repeats himself, escalates, or makes you feel responsible for his emotional state is something else.

Pressure isn’t always obvious. It can look like repeated attempts to change your mind, guilt, ultimatums, silence, withdrawal, or persistent questioning.

If that is happening, speaking with someone outside the relationship can help. Avenue Women’s Center offers free, confidential pregnancy consultations where you can think through your options without outside influence. If your partner would like support, Avenue also offers services specifically for men, giving them a place to ask questions, process emotions, and learn how they can support you.

If you ever feel unsafe, threatened, or afraid because of your partner’s behavior, help is available. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233 or at thehotline.org.

Before making any pregnancy decision, it’s also important to understand your pregnancy. A lab-quality pregnancy test and a limited ultrasound can provide important information about how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, equipping you for your next steps.
