As if making decisions on our own isn’t difficult enough, it can be a whole different ballgame when we add another person into that process. Maybe that other person is your partner or spouse and you haven’t always had the best track record when it comes to agreeing on things. Having a difficult time compromising with somebody you love can add even more stress to an already high-stakes situation such as an unexpected pregnancy.
At Avenue Women’s Center, we care about you and your story. We also care that you and your partner can come to a decision you both are ready for. Our caring pregnancy consultants are here to offer you and your partner a nonjudgmental and unbiased space to process your thoughts, emotions, and plans for the future.

Working Toward a Pregnancy Decision
If you and your partner have largely differing opinions about this pregnancy and which decision to make, it’s important to work through the situation before going forward. Perhaps you feel panicked and like you have to choose right now, but affording yourself a little bit of time to sit down and process alone and together can be beneficial.
Steps to Communication
Having calm and clear communication with your partner will prove to be important. This is somebody you probably want on your side during this time. Here are a few communication tips for making a pregnancy decision together.
- Take time to process on your own. Think about your goals and values in life. Breathe, relax, and put together the pieces.
- Choose an unhurried time and space to sit down and truly listen and talk to your partner without forcing your own way or opinions. More times than not, those we love just want to be heard and valued.
- View this situation as working towards a team toward the best outcome, not as the two of you against each other. Reframing how we approach a situation can make all the difference in how we communicate.
When You Still Disagree
As you communicate with your partner, you may find some things you agree on or value. You can work with these to come to the best pregnancy decision for both of you. If you still find yourself bumping heads, it may be helpful to seek outside help and perspectives from a professional.
Sometimes, finding out even more about your pregnancy can help in the decision-making process. You never know what piece of information could cause a change of mind. Having an ultrasound exam is a good step towards learning more. Avenue Women’s Center offers both medical-grade pregnancy tests and ultrasounds free of charge.
Whether you come to a decision together or are still struggling through that choice, we would love to become part of your support system. We can offer you resources and information to help you come to a decision that is right for you and your partner. We look forward to meeting with you soon and walking with you during this time.
