Not a month goes by that we don’t hear this phrase from a young woman… usually spoken through tears.
“I don’t want to be a statistic.”
When we hear it, what does she mean? Typically, she is saying something like, “I feel like I have to terminate this pregnancy because I don’t want to be just another…
- unmarried mother
- mom who uses Medicaid
- woman who dropped out of school
- lady who has children with different fathers
- struggling person, like my mom who had me when she was a teenager.”
Do any of those scenarios describe how you’re feeling?
At Avenue Women’s Center, we want you to know that we understand these feelings. We respect them – and you – and all the positive goals you’ve set for your life.
Also, we want you to know that you don’t need to be a prisoner of your goals. We believe there is a lot of value to fully exploring the pressures you’re experiencing. There’s power in making sure you’re not just responding to a label “they” might try to put on you. Whatever your best decision is, we want to help you make sure you made it for YOU.
As you’re sorting through your options and seeking the best you can find, perhaps you’ve thought how helpful it would be to have someone you could talk with about it. Not so much a family member or close friend, but rather a compassionate, neutral ally who’s far enough removed from the situation to be able to listen without judgment and to help you think past the immediate concerns you’re facing to get as complete a picture as possible for your best choices. That’s what we’re here for.
Avenue Women’s Center and our experienced pregnancy consultants have been at work in Chicagoland for over thirty-five years. We take pride in being known as the first step for women challenged by an unplanned pregnancy. We’ve heard the stories and felt the pain you are experiencing. No one should have to do this all alone.
We hope you will allow us to walk with you on this difficult path as you face the decisions ahead of you. We care about you and your situation, and it is our commitment to support you every step of the way. All our services are strictly confidential, and many are free of cost to you. We hope you will contact us by call, text, email or chat to schedule an appointment with a client advocate at one of our five DuPage County locations. We will be honored to journey with you.
