“I Took Several Negative Pregnancy Tests, Then One Positive. What Does This Mean?”

What could be more stressful than getting a pregnancy test result that you didn’t want or expect?  Getting inconsistent results, perhaps.  Maybe you’ve gotten a positive result on a home pregnancy test after several negatives.  You were likely feeling a little more reassured with each test that you took, only to find yourself in a panic, questioning what to believe and what to do with this confusing information. You’ve come to the right place.  Your circumstances may feel overwhelming right now, but it’s possible to find some much-needed clarity with timeliness and efficiency.  Our expert team at Avenue Women’s Center is available to navigate this by your side.

Avenue is a limited medical clinic that helps individuals get the pregnancy information and support that they need, when they need it.  Our free and confidential services include (but are not limited to) medical-grade pregnancy tests, options consultations, and limited medical ultrasounds.  We have 5 convenient locations in Chicagoland, and we offer virtual consultations.

What Could This Mean?

Inconsistent results on home pregnancy tests can have a number of different causes, such as taking the test too soon.  It can be tempting to explore the internet for possible explanations.  However, this may escalate your anxiety, and probably won’t bring you much closer to a reliable answer.  Instead of going down a deep hole of “what-ifs,” take active steps to find clarity.  You can begin that process by taking a confirmation pregnancy test (following instructions closely) or by speaking with a qualified medical professional.

When and How to Take a Home Pregnancy Test

There are steps you can take to maximize your chances of getting a clear and accurate pregnancy test result.  It may be helpful to ask yourself whether or not you’ve been following these precautions so far.

  • When? Pregnancy tests work by measuring the pregnancy hormone HCG.  According to Mayo Clinic, a person is more likely to get an accurate positive result if she takes the test a day or two after a missed period, because (in theory) her body will have produced an easily detectable amount of HCG by then.  Some pregnancy tests can accurately identify pregnancy earlier on.  Carefully read the instructions on any home pregnancy test that you use, and consider taking follow-up tests after waiting periods.  In the early stages of pregnancy, HCG doubles every 2-3 days (Mayo Clinic).
  • How? Again, it’s important to follow any instructions on the packaging of the home pregnancy test.  Make sure that you’re waiting the appropriate length of time to check the results, looking for the control indicator if your test has one, and throwing away expired tests (Mayo Clinic).
