Here are a few basic facts that we hope will be helpful for your research into medication abortion:
- Medication abortion is approved by the FDA for a woman up until 10 weeks of pregnancy. Estimates about how far along you are can be made using the first day of your last menstrual period.
- An ultrasound is required to accurately date the pregnancy. (The ultrasound may also indicate whether this is a viable pregnancy or if it might end on its own through miscarriage. This is the case for one in 5 or 6 pregnancies. If the ultrasound reveals this as a possibility, you may be able to avoid the expense and complications of the abortion entirely. Good to know!).
- Two separate pills are taken for a medication abortion. The first stops the pregnancy from growing. The second is typically taken 24 to 48 hours after the first pill. This one causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy.
- A final doctor’s appointment is needed to be certain that none of the contents of the uterus remain.
As noted above, there is often value to utilizing ultrasound. To discuss the option of ultrasound in your situation, please reach out to us. As with our other services, women are invited to take the information they receive and move forward in whatever direction they decide is best for their situation. We are dedicated to providing a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment for everyone we serve.
We hope this extra information has been useful if you are beginning to consider medication abortion in Downers Grove. Please remember that we are nearby, and would consider it our privilege to assist you with your pregnancy questions and concerns. You can reach us by phone, text, email or chat.
