When I think about being side tracked by a particular fear or anxiety, I think of this story from my childhood. My sister was so nervous on her wedding day; her main concern was walking up the three stairs from the aisle to the altar. In her mind, over and over she pictured herself tripping up the stairs and ruining her beautiful dress or spoiling the “picture perfect wedding she had imagined’. Never having been known as extremely graceful she played this scene repeatedly in her mind.
The wedding day arrived and as she got ready, she decided to keep her hot pink fluffy slippers on while she was at home. This would reduce the chance of any falls before she even got to the church. The morning went by fast as they usually do on such a day. She walked down the long aisle accompanied by her father and everything went just as she had imagined. Now came the dreaded stairs she would have to climb. She very carefully lifted up her dress so to eliminate the chance of falling or tripping on the stairs and when she did she realized to her horror that she still had her “Hot Pink Furry” slippers on. In all her nervousness, she had forgotten to put on her wedding shoes!
I laughed at she shared this story with me. I was only a child when she married so I was not aware of what had happened. But isn’t that so typical of us? We get focused on one problem that we are so sure is going to be a disaster. That fixation causes us to ignore something else that needs our attention. In her case what was forgotten was to put on her shoes. Perhaps, you might find that in your case, it is something that carries a bit more weight.
