Before making any decisions about your unexpected pregnancy, it’s important to make sure you have all the facts so you can make a fully-informed decision. One of the ways we help provide education and support is with an ultrasounds.

No-Cost Limited Ultrasounds

If you’ve taken a pregnancy test that came back positive, your next step should be to get an ultrasound. This will reveal vital information you’ll need before you can make any further decisions. Here’s what an ultrasound will tell you and why it’s important:

Gestational Age

Ultrasounds will help you understand how far along you are in the pregnancy (the gestational age). Knowing the gestational age is important whether you’re considering an abortion or carrying to term because it will determine the kind of abortion you can have and the due date if you’re planning to parent or make an adoption plan.

Location of the Pregnancy

In a healthy, normal pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. But sometimes something goes wrong and it implants somewhere else, most typically in the Fallopian tubes. This is called a tubal or ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound will reveal where the pregnancy is located so you can make decisions based on facts for your own health. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable (cannot complete the normal growth and development of pregnancy) and require a different medical procedure (not an abortion).

Viability

Finally, an ultrasound will reveal whether the pregnancy is viable (whether or not it’s likely to continue). It’s possible a pregnancy test can come back positive, but your body can be miscarrying at the same time. Miscarriage is the natural loss of a pregnancy for unknown reasons. It occurs in 1 out of every 5 or 6 pregnancies. An ultrasound can let you know where you stand with the possibility of miscarriage for your pregnancy.
