Know that it’s possible to take a step back to care for your physical and emotional wellness. That’s achievable even when you’re highly anxious. Self-Care Through Inward and Outward Focus
Some of the blogs we’ve shared in the past (like “8 Methods for Self-Care During Pregnancy” and “Prioritizing Self-Care During Seasons of Change”) highlight some of the key ways that individuals practice self-care. Some of the most well-known include exercising regularly, eating healthy meals, getting adequate sleep, and engaging in relaxation exercises. These are all healthy and beneficial habits. They can make a big difference in improving a person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
This may sound a little ironic, but shifting your focus toward others can also be a form of self-care. This could mean anything from taking a friend out for coffee, to joining a faith community, to volunteering at your favorite local charity. Maybe you’re already exhausted from caring for others at work or at home. It’s okay if you need time to yourself! Your ideal self-care plan will take your unique needs into account. Finding a healthy and fulfilling self-care routine is all about balance. However, many of us would probably be surprised to learn how much we humans benefit from spending time in service to others. We all need a sense of community in order to thrive, and giving of our time and resources can bring a strong sense of purpose. Sometimes, one of the best ways to care for ourselves is to get our minds off of ourselves for a little while.
A Lifestyle of Self-Care
Have you ever noticed how that feeling of satisfaction self-care brings always seems to wear off eventually? Perhaps what each of us needs more than a “self-care day” is a “self-care lifestyle.” Consider what your own day-to-day life would look like if you practiced self-care so consistently that these habits became seamlessly woven into your routine. This way of life takes time and discipline to cultivate. You can begin by using self-care techniques that feel intuitive and fit naturally into your day. Rather than shaming yourself when you miss the mark, look for new opportunities.
If you’re anything like me, perhaps you’ve found that practicing self-care can be challenging. Most of us have heard time and again how important it is. Yet, it can be tough to carve out space in our schedules for dedicated self-care. Know that making time for this important process is achievable with a little planning and prioritizing. Similarly, it’s possible (and vital) to take the time that you need to process your pregnancy situation. Navigating this pregnancy journey one step at a time is the best way to care for yourself as you consider which outcome is right for you. Make sure that all your physical and emotional health needs are met before your pregnancy decision is made. Look for ways to access practical and emotional support. All of this will give you a sense of firm footing, which will boost your confidence in your decision-making process.
Practicing self-care is one effective way to cope with your unexpected pregnancy. Another is to gather information about your unique pregnancy, options, and resources. Contact Avenue Women’s Center to begin that process today! We’re here to support and empower you, no matter what you decide.
