Unexpectedly Pregnant and Single This Valentine’s Day

Oh, Valentine’s Day.  Some of us love you, because you give us a warm, fuzzy feeling and heart-shaped pizza.  Some of us hate you, because you sometimes trigger waves of loneliness and disappointment.  And some of us don’t pay much attention to you.  For lots of people, though, February 14th is the most emotionally complicated holiday of the year.  Maybe you’re currently single, and not only that, but you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy.  You’re likely feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the visual reminders of Valentine’s season and talk of romantic date nights.  You’re undoubtedly concerned about the potential long-term ramifications of this pregnancy as well.  Know that you’re not alone.  You have what it takes to blaze your own trail through this complex season of life, and reach a positive outcome- no matter your relationship status.

Avenue Women’s Center exists to walk beside women on their unique pregnancy journeys.  We’re a limited medical clinic that’s passionate about helping individuals discover all the reliable information and caring support they need to step forward with confidence.  We’ve been serving in this critical role from our home base in Chicagoland for over 40 years!

You Have a Lot on Your Plate

If you’re unexpectedly pregnant and single this Valentine’s Day, you may feel as though you have many reasons to be unhappy.  Whether your relationship ended yesterday or years ago, whether it was a breakup or a divorce, whether you’re okay with being single or not… you may still be mourning the loss of your ex-partner.  You’re also facing multiple circumstances that can naturally cause feelings of loneliness.  Needless to say, singleness can sometimes feel isolating.  An unexpected pregnancy can as well, especially if your loved ones don’t know about it yet or haven’t been supportive.  Not to mention the fact that it’s winter.  In the Midwest and many other parts of the country, harsh weather can often keep people indoors and separated from each other.  Perhaps your situation is especially complicated.  For example, maybe you’re pregnant by your ex.  If that’s the case, you probably have a lot of extra hurdles to clear.  Don’t give up!  Just because you have a lot on your plate, doesn’t mean that you don’t have a hopeful future ahead of you.

Approaching a Pregnancy Decision as a Single Person

Like anyone who’s facing an unexpected pregnancy, you have options available to you:  abortion, adoption, and parenting.  There are options within your options as well (like different abortion methods and adoption plans).  It’s only natural for your relationship status to influence which alternatives seem right or realistic for you.  Some women who are pregnant and single feel drawn to a particular path, but believe they’d be unable to pursue it without the backing of a partner.  Does this resonate with you?  If so, it’s important to pause and examine your available resources (practical, emotional/supportive, spiritual, etc.) before you move forward with a pregnancy decision.  Chances are, you have some time to process this.  Overcoming some of your present obstacles could equip you to go after the outcome you feel most drawn to.

You Have What It Takes and Can Gain Everything Else That You Need

At Avenue Women’s Center, we’re all about empowering women to make intuitive pregnancy decisions… not based on the advantages they lack, but based on the strengths that they have.  Your strength may come in different forms, including your practical resources, support from your loved ones, and your personality traits (like bravery, resilience, or resourcefulness).  People who are coping with circumstances similar to yours often feel as though they’ve lost all their power.  This is a false illusion.  At Avenue, we partner with individuals to build the durable support networks they need to pursue their best pregnancy options.  We offer free early pregnancy services, information on resources, and ongoing emotional support to equip them for the road ahead.  Remember- you have what it takes, and can gain everything else that you need, to make your own best decision.

If you’re looking for genuine support and want to make an informed choice, reach out to Avenue!  Our expert pregnancy consultants and nurses are here for you.  We believe that no person should have to make a pregnancy decision without the reliable information and emotional backing she needs to feel equipped for any and all of her options.  The Avenue team is fully committed to providing free services of the highest quality with empathy, integrity, and professionalism.
