What’s My Role in an Unexpected Pregnancy?

While the decision about how to move forward in the pregnancy is ultimately your partner’s choice to make, you have an important role to play.

The most important thing you can do right now is support your partner by doing the following:

  • Ensure she has everything she needs to make an informed decision. You can do this by helping her research her pregnancy options, which include parenting, adoption, and abortion
  • Listen without judgment as she shares her concerns and feelings with you.
  • Let her know that you’ll be there for her no matter what she decides.
  • Help her get what she needs, whether that’s access to doctor’s appointments, special foods, vitamins, etc.

What If I Don’t Agree with My Partner’s Pregnancy Decision?

If your partner is considering a pregnancy decision you disagree with, it’s critical to approach her gently with your thoughts and feelings—her mental health depends on it.

Studies have shown that when a woman feels pressured into a pregnancy decision—especially abortion—she is more likely to experience adverse mental health outcomes, like depression.

However, it’s also important to know that your thoughts and desires are valid. If you disagree with your partner’s pregnancy decision, consider the following:

  • Gently share your thoughts and feelings with your partner.
  • Explain why you’re feeling that way.
  • Express your concerns with her pregnancy decision, but be careful not to try to convince her that your choice is right and hers isn’t.
