What Government Assistance Programs Are There for Pregnant Women?
Medicaid
A health insurance program sponsored by the government, Medicaid ensures those with a lower income are provided with adequate medical services (American Pregnancy Association). Pregnant individuals may qualify for limited coverage before they apply. An applicant must meet eligibility requirements.
All Kids
All Kids is an Illinois program that ensures children have access to affordable health care no matter their immigration status, income level, or medical conditions.
Moms & Babies
This program pays for outpatient and inpatient medical services during pregnancy and for 60 days post-birth. It also covers services for babies for the first year if the woman is covered at the time of birth.
Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility (MPE) Program
For women who are eligible based on their income, this program offers temporary coverage for outpatient medical care during pregnancy. Individuals can be eligible regardless of citizenship or immigration status. If you have MPE, you’re encouraged to apply for Moms & Babies, which pays for all medical services over a longer period of time (unlike MPE).
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)
Regardless of your ability to pay, FQHCs are community-based medical centers that offer primary and prenatal care. These patient-centered organizations work with the unique needs of clients through various services including women’s health, at little to no cost.
Other Resources During Your Pregnancy
Local Community Organizations
Within or near your neighborhood, there may be various programs in place to help women facing an unexpected pregnancy. This may include health and wellness programs through community health centers, as well as food pantry and shelter services. On top of medical care, eating right and having a safe place to live are also important to your well-being. For more information about support you may be able to receive from your local community, you may want to contact local agencies, a spiritual leader, a social worker, or a pregnancy consultant.
