The Home Pregnancy Test: A Baseline Understanding

Many people have a difficult time making sense of their home pregnancy test results.  Of course, this situation can be particularly stressful and frustrating when getting pregnant was never the aim.  Let’s begin with a brief explanation of how urine-based pregnancy tests work.  A home pregnancy test detects pregnancy by measuring a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine.  HCG is produced by the placenta once a fertilized egg implants in the uterus and the placenta is formed.  It rises rapidly in the early days of pregnancy and is only found in the human body during pregnancy (Mayo Clinic).

Take a Deep Breath

No matter why your pregnancy test results are causing confusion, there are steps you can take to discover insight and move forward with a well-informed point of view.  First of all- there are measures you can take to increase the possibility of getting a clear and accurate result on a home pregnancy test.  Carefully follow any and all pregnancy test instructions.  Take a confirmation or repeat pregnancy test, especially after a missed period.  Theoretically, at that point, a pregnancy will have grown enough to produce ample hCG to provide a reliable positive result (Mayo Clinic).

Find Caring, Professional Support

Here’s the bottom line:  It’s important to know for sure whether or not you’re pregnant.  And confusing pregnancy test results are worth seeking clarity on.  Learn what’s going on with your body so you can take informed next steps, whether you’re pregnant or not.  Seeking outside help is often the wisest course of action for someone who’s just feeling worried or confused.  Chances are, this will make a world of difference.

Avenue Women’s Center is a limited medical clinic that offers highly accurate, medical-grade pregnancy tests at no cost.  We also provide free limited medical ultrasounds to identify, 1) where a pregnancy is located, 2) the gestational age, and 3) the possibility of miscarriage.  If an individual who connects with us needs additional support (prenatal care, other medical resources, a blood pregnancy test through a doctor’s office, etc.) we can provide a comprehensive list of referrals.

Confusing pregnancy test results can trigger a lot of stress.  Don’t let the uncertainty of your situation overwhelm you.
