Planned Parenthood: Not Our Competition
Avenue Women’s Center in Naperville

At times, we hear comments like: “It must be challenging for you to operate so near a Planned Parenthood clinic.” Actually – it’s not!

Our Avenue Women’s Center clinics meet very specific needs in our community. We provide services that other clinics do not. We offer free services. And we care for our patients in a way that is far different than other clinics.

Many years ago, we contracted with a development firm in order to review our Avenue Women’s Center brand. As part of the process, our upper management knew the firm would send secret shoppers into our different clinics. We were not told that they would also contact other pregnancy testing centers in the area. When the firm’s report was submitted, we learned that the other clinics were described as “transactional.” One shopper said it felt like the most important issue was the cost and how it could be paid for. In contrast, the shopper of the Avenue Women’s Center clinics described her visit:

  • “Different from the outset”
  • “Much calmer and consultative”
  • “Warm, inviting waiting room”
  • “Friendly, caring people”

It has always been a top priority for us to treat our patients in a nonjudgmental environment in a way that conveys our respect and care for them. It was terrific for us to learn that it’s not just our goal; it is the reality of how clients experience our clinics. We have remained committed to that vision of providing excellent caring services in DuPage County.

It’s not just the way we provide services that is different. Our services themselves actually meet needs that would otherwise be unmet in DuPage County.

When a woman is thinking “I’m scared I’m pregnant,” it is important for her to have access to an accurate, free pregnancy test. She deserves to have space to process all of the aspects of her decision. How far along is she? What is a late term abortion? What are her abortion risks? Is there a chance the pregnancy could be miscarrying naturally? What would be the impact of a pregnancy on her educational goals? What if she’s pregnant and going into the military? What if she just needs support as she faces all that is happening?

Avenue Women’s Center is that first step for a woman who finds herself pregnant. Before she calls an abortion clinic. Before she tries to figure everything out on her own, or just with a friend. Avenue Women’s Center provides that expertise and support that every woman deserves. And, as a nonprofit agency, we’re able to provide those services for free.

So, if you are thinking of calling Planned Parenthood or another local pregnancy testing center, we hope that you will consider contacting us first. We care, and we are here for you.
