What Is a Medical Abortion?

Typically, a medical abortion involves taking two doses of RU-486, often known as Mifepristone and Misoprostol, within the first 10 weeks of your last menstrual period.

The first dose, Mifepristone, usually blocks the production of progesterone. This is a hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol is usually taken 24-48 hours later. It typically causes the uterus to contract and expand in order to expel the uterine content. You may experience cramping and bleeding that can last for a few hours or days.

It’s possible that you may need to have a physical exam later to determine if the abortion pill worked. In the event that the medical abortion is incomplete, you may need to then schedule an appointment for a surgical procedure.

Can I Buy The Abortion Pill Online?

A healthcare provider with certain qualifications typically prescribes the abortion pill. Generally, RU-486 is only dispensed in medical offices, abortion clinics, or hospitals. According to current regulations under the FDA, the abortion pill cannot be sold legally over the internet. The cost of the abortion pill can often range from $300 to $800. These expenses are often related to things like lab work, office visits, testing services, and what state you live in. This may be something to factor into your decision-making process.

Are There Steps to Take Before an Abortion Decision?

Determining the gestational age of your unexpected pregnancy is often an important step. The abortion pill is only FDA-approved for use through the first 10 weeks. Since some women are unsure about when their last menstrual period was, and estimating how far along you are can be confusing. So, consulting a professional is strongly advised.

Ultrasound & Medical Exam

An ultrasound exam is typically the most accurate method for dating pregnancies. It can also screen for conditions such as an ectopic pregnancy. This is when an embryo implants outside of your uterus, and it can be a serious condition that requires immediate medical treatment. Women who are diagnosed with this complication are usually ineligible for the abortion pill.

There may be other factors that can disqualify you from being able to take RU-486. Before most women undergo a medical abortion, they often will schedule an appointment with a doctor to assess their physical condition. You may not be recommended for the abortion pill if you have any preexisting conditions, or if you’re taking blood clotting medications. Any of these factors can potentially increase your risk of experiencing side effects.

Awareness of Potential Side Effects

It’s beneficial for your own health to exercise caution if you see the abortion pill being sold on the internet. Purchasing it online may not involve the oversight of a medical professional, and there may not be a follow-up appointment afterward. This can be important if you’re struggling with prolonged nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, as an aftercare appointment can help you indicate if you have an infection.

Identify Available Resources

If you’re looking into the abortion pill as an option, it’s recommended you take the time to meet with a professional resource to discuss your choices. By talking through your potential decision, you can balance what you learn about the procedure with how you may feel about it. An unexpected pregnancy is often a very personal journey. Locating a place where you can receive accurate information can be a helpful first step.

Researching the abortion pill by yourself can be stressful, and it can lead to you feeling overwhelmed about your circumstances. Avenue Women’s Center can talk you through the steps behind each of your options. We’ll explain the different types of abortion procedures, as well as potential side effects. We also offer free, limited ultrasound exams to determine gestational age and alert you to any early pregnancy risks, such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
